Jacksonville Local Guide
Moving to Jacksonville, Texas
Moving to Jacksonville TX? Get the basics organized before move-in day, during your first week, and through your first 90 days.
A practical checklist with links to official agencies and Our Town guides you’ll actually use.
Your moving plan
Start with the right tasks, in the right order.
This Moving to Jacksonville TX checklist is arranged around the move itself. Follow each official link for applications, eligibility, deadlines and changing requirements.
Before you move
Get the address and services ready.
- Confirm utility coverage and schedule a start date before moving. Not every Jacksonville mailing address is served by City utilities. Ask who provides water, sewer and trash service for your exact address, then arrange required services by move-in day. For city-served properties, review the residential application and contact City Utility Billing ↗ .
- Arrange electricity and internet for move-in. Check power provider and broadband availability at the actual address, compare plan terms and schedule activation. Availability can change block by block. Our Town utility links →
- Confirm housing details. Ask your landlord, property manager or closing agent about move-in access, utility responsibility, trash carts and property-specific rules. If you are buying, review Cherokee CAD homestead-exemption information ↗ to see whether you qualify.
- Gather school documents if needed. JISD lists a birth certificate, immunization record, parent or guardian ID and acceptable residency proof among new-student requirements. Review JISD enrollment ↗
First week
Set up everyday life.
- Confirm your utility accounts and services are active. Verify water, sewer, electricity and any arranged sanitation service are working as expected. For city-served properties, contact City Utility Billing at 215 E. Rusk St. or 903-586-3510 about account access or questions. City account forms ↗
- Check trash service. Confirm the collection schedule, cart placement and whether bulky-item pickup needs a separate request. Trash and city services →
- Forward your mail. Use the official Postal Service change-of-address process, and separately update important accounts. USPS moving service ↗
- Complete new-student enrollment with Jacksonville ISD. For students new to JISD, start online through Skyward, then follow district instructions to schedule and attend the in-person eligibility appointment with the required records. Call 903-586-6511 with questions. Official new-student steps ↗ Our Town schools guide →
First 30–90 days
Take care of Texas paperwork.
- Vehicle registration: generally within 30 days for arrivals from another state. Review Texas insurance and TxDMV requirements. The Cherokee County Tax Office lists a Jacksonville location at 301 W. Commerce St., 903-586-9051 . Call before visiting to confirm the branch processes first-time out-of-state registration, required forms, payment and appointments. Official TxDMV steps ↗
- Texas driver license: generally within 90 days for arrivals from another state. After handling vehicle registration, check Texas DPS requirements for identity, Texas residency, eligible licenses and appointments. Driver licensing is handled by DPS, not the county tax office. Texas DPS moving guide ↗
- Know the current inspection rules. Since 2025, most noncommercial vehicles do not require a Texas safety inspection for registration. Requirements differ for commercial vehicles and emissions counties. Cherokee County is not on the state’s emissions-county list. Current TxDMV rules ↗
- Build your local contact list. Choose healthcare, bookmark Helpful Contacts → and save the Emergency & Public Safety guide → for local non-emergency numbers and preparedness information.
